Globo Wins Two International Emmys

Rede Globo’s drama department will always remember the night of November 25, 2013 with pride. The broadcaster won two International Emmys, which are to TV what the Oscar is to movies. The ceremony took place in New York.

Side by Side, a telenovela aired in the 6:00 p.m. slot, won over the jury and was chosen the best of the year. It defeated Brasil Avenue (one of Globo’s biggest drama hits in the last few years), as well as Canadian 30 Vies and Angolan Windeck.

Side by Side is the fourth Globo telenovela to win an International Emmy. It shows how favelas appeared in the early 20th century and portrays the society of Rio de Janeiro, the capital of the newly-founded Brazilian republic.

In addition, Fernanda Montenegro became the first Brazilian actress to win International an Emmy. She was awarded for her performance in the Sweet Mother series, aired as part of Globo’s year-end special lineup in 2012. The series will be rerun in 2014.
